Starts at the Mam Nick car park, follows the Great Ridge over Lose Hill, then drops into Castleton via Hollowford Road. Wind exposure on the ridge can be fierce from November to March.
Rough peat groughs, no clear path for the middle third. We carry emergency bivvy gear on this one. Navigation skills are tested, and we teach compass bearings at the halfway point if you want to learn.
The classic Lake District scramble. Grade 1 scrambling on exposed rock for about 400 metres. We supply helmets and run this route with a maximum of six clients per guide.
Gentle limestone dale walking near Bakewell. Wildflowers from May to July, trout visible in the river. A good option if you want to ease into hill walking or bring older family members.
Grade 1/2 scramble with serious exposure. We require previous scrambling experience for this route. Groups are capped at four. We carry a rope for the pinnacles section but aim to move unroped where conditions allow.
Collect from our Manchester base the evening before your trip. Return within 48 hours of the walk ending.
Osprey Atmos AG, sizes S to L. Hipbelt and back panel moulded. Comes with a rain cover.
Scarpa Ranger GTX, sizes UK 5–12. Break-in period already done. We sanitise between hires.
MSR Hubba Hubba NX. Packs down to 1.5 kg. Includes groundsheet and guy ropes. Not suitable for winter wild camps above 600 m.
Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork. Adjustable 63–140 cm. Cork grips wick sweat better than foam on long days.
Six clients, two guides. Cloud base at 450 m for most of the afternoon. We pitched at Bleaklow Stones and had clear skies by 21:00. Temperature dropped to 2 °C overnight.
Four clients. Dry rock, light wind from the south-west. Completed the ridge in 45 minutes. One client needed a hand on the bad step; the rest moved confidently.
Teaching day: compass bearings, pacing, contour interpretation. Snow patches on the plateau made feature identification harder, which was the point. All five clients passed the route-finding exercise.
Turned back at Crib Goch due to ice on the ridge. We rerouted to the Pyg Track and summited via the standard path. Refunds issued for the scramble supplement.
For easy routes, you should be comfortable walking for three hours on uneven ground without stopping. Moderate routes assume you can manage a full day on your feet with a pack. Hard routes require hill fitness: if you can run 5 km on the flat in under 30 minutes, you will cope. We ask about your recent activity when you book so we can suggest the right grade.
Rain alone does not cancel a trip. We check the Met Office mountain forecast at 18:00 the day before and again at 06:00 on the day. If wind speeds above 600 m are forecast over 50 mph, or if there is a red weather warning, we postpone and offer the next available date at no extra cost. If we downgrade the route for safety, we refund the price difference.
On easy-grade routes only, and the dog must be on a lead near livestock. Scrambling routes are not safe for dogs. Let us know at booking so we can confirm the route is suitable.
Weekend dates fill up roughly three weeks ahead from April to October. Midweek slots are usually available with five days notice. Winter scrambles (November to February) book up faster because we only run them on specific weather windows.
All guides hold Mountain Leader (ML) certification through Mountain Training. Two of our team also hold the Winter Mountain Leader award. Every guide carries a group first aid kit and holds a current 16-hour Outdoor First Aid certificate renewed annually.
